STEP 1

Experiment with ideas of creating a home (Inquiry)

Children are introduced to the idea of Tiny homes through lecture, pictures and short videos.
Lesson: Using lego, or alternately drawing on paper, students individually create a home
Students share their ideas of house with the class

STEP 2

Determine “need to know questions” (Parameters)

Students discuss with the teacher what experimenting with building a house made them think about

Discussion should lead to parameters such as:

  1. Design options

  2. Necessities: bedroom, bathrooms, kitchens etc.

  3. Building codes

  4. Need for a floor plan

STEP 3

Create floor plan (Design)

Students Teams are introduced to the concept of creating floor plans.

Students learn to apply:

  • Conversion and measurement

  • Angles of walls and roof

  • Perimeter, area and volume

  • Designing to scale 

After floor plan is created two student teams will converge to to offer constructive criticism of each design.

From that peer review the teams will construct a final design.

STEP 4

Build a model (Create)

Teams will create a model of their home using the material of their choice (paper, cardboard, popsicle sticks, wood, etc.)
The model of the home must be to the exact measurements and specifications of the floor plan.

STEP 5

Present a presentation (Communicate ideas)

Teams will create a poster outlining the steps of the tiny House project.

Teams will present their project to the class along with their model house and floor plan.

STEP 6

Build a written portfolio (Final product)

Teams will construct a portfolio about the process of building a tiny house. They will include diagrams, floor plan, and a photo of their model.
